Protective Mother

Here are some pictures of a mother spider protecting her eggs. Or maybe she is going to eat them herself, and is fending off my pen?
It turned out that trying to wrangle the spider, pen, and camera in low light was just too much for me, so this shot is blurry. But it does give you some sense of scale.

This shot is a little more in-focus. Maybe those aren’t eggs in there; maybe they are eggs laid in some insect (because it looks like some insect might be in there, and I can’t imagine that this type of spider would have put that much effort into tying up a “regular” meal).
