Hover Fly Mostly Sits Around

This hoverfly seemed more interested in licking my hand clean than doing any actual hovering. I found it while camping.

Looking like a yellowjacket, it must not have many natural enemies — either that, or it was desperately hungry — because I was able to pick it up by the wing from my friend’s leg without it getting agitated. It just crawled up onto my thumb.

I let go of its wing when I realized that it had no intention of leaving.

This fly’s mouth was slightly sticky (and not sharp or biting) as it walked around my hand eating whatever dirt or fly food I may have accumulated on my camping trip.

It just kept eating…

and eating…
